My mission as a teacher is to model a relationship with music that is engaged, personal, passionate, curious, joyful, respectful, and fun. My hope is that each student leaves my studio not only with increased skills and knowledge, but with a love for music that will last for a lifetime, and the tools to successfully pursue music, later in life, in any capacity the student may choose.

Piano Instruction

Deeply committed to sharing the art of music through teaching, Rachel Matthews is inspired by the ongoing one-on-one musical explorations that have shaped generations of musicians. Over her 20+ years of teaching, students have included children, adult amateurs, conservatory students, and professionals. She has extensive experience in the Taubman approach to piano playing (over 25 years of experience, and nine years of study with first-generation Taubman exponents). Dr. Matthews offers a safe environment in which to help each student, regardless of age, level, or background, to discover and develop their own innate musicianship, and expressive capacity. She maintains a vibrant and active independent studio in Seattle.

She has held teaching fellowships at Princeton University (musicology) and the Peabody Conservatory (piano), in addition to teaching at the Seattle Conservatory, the Washington Academy of Performing Arts, the Austin Chamber Music Program, and the Academie Internationale de Musique in Tours, France, among others. Dr. Matthews is past director of chamber music studies at the Academy of Music Northwest.

Rachel has offered workshops, lectures, and adjudication for many groups & organizations. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Seattle Music Teachers Association, and holds the designation of Nationally Certified Teacher of Music through the Music Teachers National Association.

Rachel Matthews is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and the North Carolina School of the Arts, and holds a doctorate in piano performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she was recipient of the Irving Lowens Memorial Prize and the Peabody Career Development Grant.
